Shakespears Sister are AMAZING. As everything that goes on my mental love list they are da perfect combo of amazing individual style, mind-blowin OTT music, and borderline obscurity. i fell in love with them a few years ago when their major hit was brought to my attention while watching a videotape ov french &saunderz wit ma m8 trixie(hi gurl). i instantly remembered the song/group from childhood (nostalgia is always a good one to get me hooked), and completely connected with their melodramatic, overpowering, campy, anachronistic tragic beauty. if their name has rung a bell for you, you might remember their 1992 #1 mega hit 'Stay'. This is the song and video that pulled me instantly to them. If you've never heard the song or seen the clip before, be prepared for some MAYJAH 'MAZIN'NESS:

wow gr8 ay. it's like a tragic epic saga trilogy movie condensed into 4mins of pure emotional rollercoasting bliss. with amazing cinematography, costume design and first class acting too of course.

Shakespears Sister were made up of Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey, both established musicians before meeting. can i drop da bomb?

so as u can probably see i love the phrase 'da bomb'. i just do. to me it is the ultimate statement of awe and enthusiasm and props and gratitude for something or someone. when i say things or people are 'da bomb' i am giving them the absolute highest level of praise. it might seem crass and uncultured, outdated and demode (unfashionable) or simply absurd to say someone/thing you admire is 'da bomb' - but to me that phrase, picked from the gutter of 90's slang obscurity, is perfect.

urban dictionary's first and highest rated definition for 'da bomb' is; 'A really stupid way of saying something's awesome...I mean how old is it now??'. obviously, they are not da bomb and have no understanding of how to harness and use such a powerful statement - and believe me it is powerful. as the rating on urban dictionary suggests, the majority of people think the saying is old and 'really stupid'. so if i was to say "so and so is DA BOMB" to someone i've just met, they might think i've had no human interaction since 1998. but i've found that for me this is not the case, and this is because i believe i have harnessed the power of 'da bomb'.

first of all 'da bomb' fits in well with my personal manifesto. bombs are initially synonymous with weapons, death and destruction. it is the destructive element i like most, mainly the destruction of deep-seeded asummptions, gender and age roles and all other fucked up things that are built into the foundation of human society and allow people to be discriminated against. bombs are also a good way to effect lots of things at one time. like the purpose of a real bomb is to destroy things, if you had a bomb filled with orgasms you could make lots of living things orgasm at one time when you detonate it. like my 'get over it' bomb, where it crashes down to earth and destroys all human hang-ups. ugh i'm getting really side-tracked. anyway, i see describing something as 'da bomb' as describing something truly great, something that penetrates you through every pore and orifice, like radiation, something that could endlessly influence and inspire you. even if you just say "this fly spray is da bomb", the fly spray has penetrated you to the point of exclaiming its awesomeness and could endlessly inspire you, say, to kill lots more flies and arrange them all on a canvas to spell out 'yuck' (uhm no i haven't done that... yet). so what i'm actually saying is that anything is 'da bomb' if you think it is.
the word 'bomb' is inherently powerful, given its form in real life, and i am all about being powerful and controlling my environment. all of these factors combined make 'da bomb' pretty much the perfect phrase for me.

then there's the way i look - first of all, i am not an ecko-wearing wannabe gangsta. this definitely helps with my 'da bomb' credibility. i am a girl, i have white skin (which says kinda nothing for my heritage), i am fat, and i dress well. well, as in i think i dress well in my orange-based ethnic/romantic/gothic gearz (yez i can describe it like dat). so i am definitely not the "type" that urban dictionary users (or anybody else) would assume still uses this phrase. therefore, my use of the term is initially disconcerting to people, (please note it is always my intention to make people feel uneasy and bust their assumptions) which throws them off their initial assumptions of who i am based on the way i look, and, i have noticed, sparks intrigue instead of repulsion. which is very interesting. is it the way i hold myself confidently and the way i say the phrase enthusiastically that makes people take me seriously and not be repulsed by it? do they see it as a reclaimed statement like black people and the n-word, although reclaimed by someone who it didn't fit with in the first place making it really cool or even just ok? etc etc. what all of the possible reasons have in common is that they all give the phrase power.
which brings me to the way i say it - people don't take you seriously if you limply slide it in mid-conversation, or if you say it in a weak mimsy voice. like any phrase or exclaimation you have to say it with whole-hearted enthusiasm to make people listen and know that no other phrase could come close to describing how much so and so is the best.
lastly, i believe in it. i believe it is powerful and therefore it is instilled with power when i say it. pretty airy-fairy, but i like to think that if you actually believe in your mind that something is powerful and/or cool other people will think that too. i mean, look what it's done for religion ;>.

SO YUH all of these things; the way it fits in with what i'm about, the way i look, how i say it, and my belief in the liberal use of it are all key to unlocking and harnessing the hidden power of 'da bomb'. and if you've decided u can also harness the hidden power of 'da bomb', allsyagotstado is follow my main rules and people will listen, they will think 'da bomb' is the best comeback since mark inglis, and they will think U DA BOMB.

the world outside the window above my desk is greygreygrey and everything looks wind-whipped, and i feel the same. with the onset of winter all my mind can think about is how everyday from now til late september will look like this, or worse.
at this time of year when the weather actually starts turning to shit, i start to feel really crappy too. and especially on days when i have no need to leave the house i start thinking i can wear my floral nightie and peach cardie all day long(!), research government conspiracy theories and write an anthropological mini-essay i pose for myself! sheesh, and it's really all unproductive to what i actually have to do - which is a fair bit and now i feel myself slipping behind.
i know it's just a phase that i'll get over like every year, but man it sucks feeling all helpless and crappy and there's shitty weather outside!

oh i actually got dressed today, go me. and you know what? it immediately made me feel soooo much better than yesterday. i'm wearing a really 90's inspired outfit, as in all the clothes are from the 90's. a fluffy orange zip up cardigan and grey leopard print mesh mini skirt, can i be in a smashmouth video clip yet? (lol gross) a big bow in my hair is also DA BOMB.

then i got to thinkin what would reeeally make me feel better in this type of weather - so i went on polyvore, which is basically the best and worst (for serial procrastinators like me) thing ever. it's a website where you can search thousands of clothing and accessory items and create a visual board of outfits and looks that you love! i planned some dream outfits for the season, now all i have to do is get them in real life... anyway, here is one that i made earlier:

i'm really lovin this song from Passion Pit called The Reeling - and the video is quite DA BOMB too. their debut album 'Manners' is out May 19 on record label French Kiss. might have to pick dat one up yo if i can get my hands on it.

so yeah i'm kinda feeling back 2 da bomb, and now if i truly love myself i will do my assignment! (maybe tomorrow ;>)

before i do a mega whopping 'you are DA BOMB' post of my 2 most treasured style icons, i thought i'd do a post about another one of my style and lifestyle icons, Corinne Drewery.
i adore corinne, she is a person that is totally inspirational to me. she fronts the pop/jazz-influenced band 'Swing Out Sister' whom i have enjoyed since i was a little girl, most known for their mid 80's hit 'Breakout' (see below for major cool stylez blowout). she loves to swim (me too omg), originally trained as fashion designer(!!), is a style icon in japan(ya hu isn't) and i recently found out we were born on the same day!!!!~virgo power~
yup so anywayz, you know what wikipedia's for guys... go there if u wanna know all da deetz but PLZ don't take the horrendous pic they've got into consideration, she is waaaay better than that. just watch THIS: (they JUST disabled embedding laaaaame, but click it again and u will go 2 utube)
the sleek black bob, the arms wrapped in chunky bangles, the turban, the dress+tights stripes assault combo, the mega over-sized shirt+bowler hat, the fabric, the fun, the design studio... siiiigh. that's pretty much how i want to live my life ay.

woah almost a year since i signed up to dis site, so k i'm actually gonna use it now. i love liverjrnl but i thort i shud upgrade or sum shiet.
so yeah this blog is just gonna be pics of me lookin hot as usual,
(viz. left - drunk, lookin like i crapped myself) pics of things i think r da bomb, and an insight into what i do... most days.
bombs over wonderland is kinda like my personal motto, god knows i love 'em; like flipping yr imagination/creative space/brain upside down and totally fucking it up, skewing it to hell so you don't know what your perception of reality is anymore. basically i'm here for me and also to screw up your life. but believe me, you'll thank me for it.
